Hi, everyone. I've scanned through the discussions of InDesign's index capabilities, but can't find what I need. I need to layout a relatively simple hymnbook. The hymns will be numbered, not the pages (at least in the main body of the book). That's because on some pages there will be more than one hymn. Is there some way I can assign a paragraph style to the hymn numbers and then create an index/table of contents that will list the hymn #s rather than the page numbers? What I'd like is a paragraph style for “Title” and one for “Hymn Number” and then have InDesign CS4 create an alphabetical list based on the Titles and list the Hymn Numbers at the right. Thanks!

I guess what I wanted to do is not really possible with InDesign CS4? I'd appreciate it if someone could confirm this or help me out a bit. :) Thanks, everybody!

I was hoping someone else would come up with some brite idea. … Both Index and Table of Contents are firmly based on the concept of “page numbers”, and you can't really blame Adobe for this ;-)

Did you try the Table of Contents Advanced options? It is possible to sort entries alphabetically, and it's also possible to not insert page numbers. However, that leaves the issue of your hymn numbers — best would be if you could insert a flush right tab right away. You do need them on the right of your titles (so you can insert flush tabs manually), and that might need some trickery in setting up your styles, etc., etc.

TOC trickery is not really my fortay …

I've never used InDexmatic or InDex Brutal, but you could try them ?

      Thanks for the ideas, Jongware!

Well, I guess I asked for a lot. I'm not a power user, and am still really just learning some of this ID stuff.

No, I haven't tired the TOC Advanced options.

I think I see what you mean, and I might be envisioning a solution: maybe create text box on each page for the title and #. Then be sure the # is at a flush right tab.

Besides just manually doing the TOC, a not-so-elegant (give-up-and-go-on) solution would be to insist on one page per hymn and fill in the empty space with something else – graphics or poetry or text.

I can't get back to it today, so I'll try tomorrow.

      Thanks again!

Looks to me as if these do not cover CS4. IndexBrutal seems not to be made for what I need — returns all instances of a word and the relevant page number. I'm not sure if IndexMatic would work for what I need or not.

It's always hard to get InDesign to link two separate paragraphs on a page. But there are a couple of ways to achieve the goal, I think.

For example, you could make the table of contents have NO page numbers, and add the numbering like this:

      https://creativepro.com/usi…..-a-toc.php

Or you could make the numbering with cross-references instead of a TOC. Maybe adding invisible numbering to the heads…

Or you could make the TOC based on “invisible” paragraphs:

      https://creativepro.com/cre…..lt-toc.php

      good luck!

Thanks, David! I think I found a solution, though I still could use some help. I couldn't get my mind around the first example (https://creativepro.com/usi…..-a-toc.php), and I have no experience with cross-references yet, so I jumped to option 3 – “invisible” paragraphs (https://creativepro.com/cre…..lt-toc.php). I just created an invisible text box on top of each hymn and put in it the title, a tab and the hymn number. By supressing page numbers in the TOC dialog and selecting alphabetical sorting, I'm good to go. My problem is that I don't know about getting the hymn numbers to go to the right margin in the TOC. Do I need to do a right tab in the invisible text boxes, or just tweet the TOC entries paragraph style and insert a leader? I tried everything I could think of, but can't seem to get it.

oops, I meant “tweek”, not “tweet” :)

Sorry about that. I had some weird negative indents in my paragraph style options dialog box. Because of that my tabs weren't working right. Looks as if all's right now, with leaders and hymn numbers at the right margin of the TOC. Thanks, everyone, for your assistance! I really appreciate it!
