InDesign won’t launch

InDesign was acting a little funky. I’d get an error of some kind and it might quit. Lately, if I highlighted something and selected CTRL+X (delete), the program would quit on me.

Today the program quit and now it won’t launch. I get the Indesign CS3 logo … the little words scroll underneath the logo until it gets to “Completing Initialization” … then the purple logo box disappears and the program does … well, nothing.

Oddly enough, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat launch just fine. InDesign is acting the problem child.

Any suggestions? Is it possible (though not preferable) to reinstall InDesign, but just leave the other programs alone?

Did you upgrade your operating system recently? CS3 is pretty old, and it could break with a new OS.
If it were me, I would probably rebuild my preferences:

Dell may have performed an update without my knowing it. This is why I never (sort of) update my system. This system may update, but the little connectors that make the software work with the system don’t necessarily update.

I tried holding down on ctrl shift and alt and clicked InDesign … same results.

When I follow the path on the page you linked to:
      Windows Vista or Windows 7:
      C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\versionanguage\ InDesign Defaults

… I get stopped dead in my tracks. There is no “language” folder. Could this be the issue?

      All sorts of folders here:
      C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3

It’s possible that CS3 didn’t have a language folder… I don’t think that’s the issue. When you try rebuilding the preferences with the keyboard shortcut, do you see the alert dialog box that says something like “are you sure you want to rebuilt your preferences?” If you don’t see that, then you’re not doing it right. :-)

David, oh yeah! When the alert popped up — “are you sure you want to rebuilt your preferences?” — I actually got worried. I did it twice. Didn’t seem to do anything. Should I hold the keys down the entire time? I think I’ve released the keys and held them down, still nothing … nada …

No, if you see that message and click OK, then you do not need to keep holding down the keys. No need to do it multiple times; if it doesn’t work the first time, it won’t work.

You can try launching the app from a different account (like a guest account) on the same computer to see if that works.

It could be a wide range of things, including what fonts you have installed. (Corrupted fonts have been known to take down the app.)

But I do wonder if you’re going to need to re-install the app. Ouch.

Ok … InDesign is working … I hit the taskbar icon and the InDesign startup screen appeared. THEN … while holding the SHIFT+CTR+ALT, I clciked on the InDesign logo. The prompt appears, “Delete the preferences?” or something. Click OK, and we’re up and running again.

Once I got the sequence correct … it works! So far, anyway!

      Thanks!
