InDesign stops responding to keyboard shortcuts

      Hi

I’ve experienced this now on multiple versions of InDesign on both Windows and MacOS platforms. For no apparent reason, InDesign stops responding to keyboard shortcuts altogether and the only way to fix the issue is to close and restart the application. Has anyone else encountered this? The only thing I can think of is that sometimes when you open a file made in an older version of InDesign, something triggers it to present this behaviour…

      Any ideas?

Hey, I noticed nobody had any ideas on this so maybe I can take a guess.

Does it stop responding to ALL keyboard shortcuts, including windows shortcuts? For example can you still do ctrl+S to save, or alt+F4 to close?

Are there any shortcuts that DO work, like is it only ctrl+[whatever] or alt+[whatever] that fails, while shortcuts like pressing V to get the arrow tool still work?

Do you want to upload a file somewhere and I can see if the problem happens on my end too? If you need a straightforward place to upload, sendspace.com should work, or dropbox.

I know that ID shortcuts can get screwed up in a weird way, where they won’t be fixable with the usual custom keyboard shortcut interface. For example I somehow broke my ability to press “Enter” to confirm a dialogue box. Nothing I did within InDesign itself could fix it. I had to edit the indesign shortcuts file directly, which is found (on windows machines) here: C:\Users\Yourname\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\InDesign\Version #n_US\InDesign Shortcut Sets\custom_shortcuts.indk

Exact details of how that was edited can be found in my post. It’s basically a text file. https://indesignsecrets.com/topic/anyone-else-getting-an-id6-bug-where-pressing-enter-doesnt-ok-dialogue-boxes-anymore#post-94415

I also have this issue occasionally. It always has to do with a wrong keyboard layout settings and this is caused by an accidentally used key combination.

ctrl+shift is changing the keyboard language settings. When you have this issue, try ctrl+shift once and notice the keyboard icon in the system tray. Then your keyboard shortcuts will work again.

I have just updated to the latest version of Monterey MacOS and now many of the standard Indesign Shortcuts are no longer worker. Eg. OPT dragging an object to duplicate it. This OPT click drag doesn’t work although it still works in say Powershop. A number of other standard shortcuts no longer work in Indesign eg. Command-Shift while dragging a corner of an object to resize object and all the contents.

Is anyone else experiencing this? Is there a workaround or something anyone has discovered? It’s very frustrating.

Did you also update to InDesign 2022? Or are you using the older version? (Personally, I’m sticking with Mojave and CC 2021 for at least a month while things get worked out.)

Often, after an update (especially after a major InDesign update), I find it useful to clean house by rebuilding preferences:
