hi everyone! this is a tricky one to explain, so please bear with me:

I have an illustrator file of a map, placed into an illustrator file of a sign. Then, this file of the sign, is placed in an indesign file with other content.

      like this:

(InDesign (Illustrator sign (Illustrator map) ) )

If I export a PDF from the sign file, everything looks perfect. If I export a PDF from the inDesign file a funny thing happens:

SOME content outside the bounding box of the map file (the innermost illustrator file) shows up in the PDF. (not in the live inDesign file, there everything looks right, it’s only when it’s exported as a PDF).

Now: if I flatten transparency, that bit of rogue art disappears, but the map appears really low res, even if I have High res in my transparency flattener options.

Funny thing is: not all bits of the map that are outside the bounding box appear. Only some.

      Any ideas? Forever grateful!

Either create a single illustrator file by copying the contents of one file into another or judiciously import both illustrator files to InDesign and it seems that you will need to use transparency properly.

thanks Steve, can you elaborate on the proper transparency?

I don’t know what you need as I can’t see your file but from the sounds of it, your transparency settings are being challenged by your “double-placing”.

I’m no Illustrator expert, but I’m wondering if you need to EMBED the original AI file into the new AI file… not just have it linked.
