Hello, I have a freelancer working on a project for us that contains several hyperlinks. She has two versions of the file – one that is using our RGB colors for us to post online and a second with our CMYK colors to be downloaded from our site and printed. The links display properly when she pdfs the document for both versions but when she uploads the CMYK version of the INDD file to our shared drive the links disappear (they do appear in the RGB). Is there anything that can be done to make sure the hyperlinks carry over in both versions?

You’re talking about hyperlinks inside a PDF? Are you using character styles for the hyperlinks? If so, perhaps make sure the character style applied to the hyperlinks is set to something visible (such as a color and underlined) in the CMYK version.

No, I’m referring to hyperlinks inside the indesign document. When she either zips it and emails the file to me or uploads it to our google drive, the hyperlinks disappear.

Hm. That is very odd. So, when you open the INDD file in InDesign, and look in the Hyperlinks panel, it is empty? Just your computer or on other computers, too? If she downloads it from the google drive and opens it up herself, are the hyperlinks gone?

The hyperlinks panel isn’t empty, it shows the items that are supposed to be linked but doesn’t actually show the urls to link to instead we have a question mark where a red or green dot traditional is. This is happening across computers including on hers if she downloads the file from the drive.

Interesting. Are these links to URLs (like, web sites?) or to other documents or something else? Maybe you could make a sample document with fake text where you find this problem, and upload it to a sharing site (like dropbox) and put the link here to the INDD file so we can test it?

Yes, the files are only linking to urls.

I don’t know how to duplicate the problem in a dummy file, so instead and going to share the link to a copy of the files we are currently working on. I’ve labeled the two documents HyperlinksMissing_letterdoc.indd and HyperlinksVisible_websiteversion.indd

I should note that she also tried sharing these to me as IDML files and the first try worked but the second time did not (after she only altered the color and size of the font).

      Here is the link.

Hi JR. Unfortunately, the folder is empty when I look in it. You can also email a link to me directly at David at indesignsecrets.com
(but please don’t send me huge files via email) :-)

Not sure what happened there, but I did just email – files are only 3MBs total.
