      Hi All

I have used the Gill Sans Nova font that is part of the Creative Cloud as it is very close to Gill Sans Std but carries so many more characters. However, the publisher that I’m working for does not like the number ‘1’ in Gill Sans Nova as it looks completely different from the normal Gill Sans Std one. The normal number one in Gill Sans is just straight up and could be confused as a capital I, and the Gill Sans Nova number 1 has a tail on it and so is not straight.

However, when I go to the Glyphs panel and to ‘numbers’ in Gill Sans Nova there I can find the straight number 1 that looks exactly like the one in Gill Sans Std and it has the same Unicode 0031 but the GID is different. So my question is, how do I make it so that this alternative number 1 in the Gill Sans Nova font comes out automatically everytime a ‘1’ is used, rather than inserting it from the Glyphs panel? I cannot see how I can access this number 1 without the Glyphs panel. I could do a search and replace, but I would like it to be inserted automatically.

I’m presuming in the Open Type features of paragraph or character styles you can select this alternative number, but I can’t work out how to do it.

I hope I’ve made this clear. Can anybody help?

      Thanks in advance.
      Johnny

Make character style for “Gill Sans Std” font family
then use GREP Style for number 1 with the character style

Look for “OpenType features > Figure Style” in you paragraph style and choose “Tabular Lining”.

Choose ‘stylistic set 3’ in the openType settings.

Thanks Godfried, but how did you know about stylistic set 3 and what each stylistic set offers?

You don’t have to answer that, but thanks for giving me the heads-up.

        Cheers

First of all, thank you all for helping me with tackling this problem.

The solution was by Godfried with his ‘Stylistic set 3’. By making it this the alternative 1 came out correctly.

      Thanks again

I installed the font and tried…
Font designers can offer glyph alternatives in these sets.
In the glyphs panel you can see what the different sets offer. (glyphs panel > show > stylistic set 1, 2, etc.)
In a paragraph style you can specify which set you want to use for a specific font (you can choose more sets if you want)

      Thank you, Godfried!
Also, here is a good article about finding alternate characters:
