I use clipart from a variety of artists for my projects. I am required by some clipart artists to flatten/merge their images into documents so that they cannot be extracted. Is there an easy way to do this in InDesign? Can I do it for all of the images in a document or, if I like, do it for certain images and not others?

Anyone skilled at editing a PDF will be able to extract the images. You cannot lock them selectively in a PDF. You can, however, apply very tight security on the final PDF. You’ll need to do that in Acrobat.

Okay. So there is no way I can flatten/merge raster images into a document. Correct?

Yes, you can embed images into a InDesign dokument, but no matter what you do, you can always extract it back again. If you can see it – you can extract it.

So Yos, you CAN flatten/merge raster imagtes into InDesign files and pdf,. but you can always extract them afterwards.
You can protect a file from editing by adding a password – but if you can see it, you can always make at “printScreen”, and get the images that way.

Best (only) way to protect you art, is by writing that you own the copywright, and that sharing og re-using the art is not allowed.

There is no such thing as a secure PDF unfortunately.

Bypassing a password protected PDF is as simple as opening it in Preview and resaving if you use a Mac.
