Help! Need to include Article panel entries when combining INDD files

I have 2 INDD files, each with one Article and some child objects listed in their Articles panels. Now I need to combine the INDD files. When I “Move Pages” of document B to the end of document A, the Articles from document B don't go along for the ride. Only the articles of document A appear after the Move.

Does anyone know of a script that would bring over the Articles info from document B, so that after the Move Pages, the Articles panel would should *both* articles … from doc A and doc B?

I ask because I'm trying to do a client job where they thoughtfully and laboriously did the Articles panel work for 110 separate INDD files (each one to three or four 2-pg spreads in length), but I now need to combine those files into a total of five or ten INDD files.

Another issue is that in each doc, the Article has the default name (each INDD has only one Article), but after combining them, I'd like to rename the Article … at least adding a number after it, or better, giving it the same name as the layout.

The good news is the Scripting Model for CS5.5 has entries for Article and Articles (plural!), and — silent hints of how it was coded inside ID — each article apparently has one or more ArticleMembers which point to pageItems; and then there are ArticleChildren as well, which also point to pageItems (apparently this one has something to do with grouped items).

So it seems it's feasible to write you up a script.

The bad news is, we still don't have a CS5.5 at the 'ffice so I can't personally offer my services.

      Jongware, good to know!

The client's decided to take on the job of combining the files and manually re-doing the articles himself, since I can't start on it for a few days anyway.

It feels like a bug, or at least, a missed step during beta testing.

While I haven't looked at the scripting DOM and I guess I could if you were stuck, I think the quick answer is to do this in IDML.

Ideally you can export all relevant docs to IDML, open the IDML (which requires unzipping, as I'm sure you, AM, know, but perhaps not all others reading do), find the relevant section on Articles, cut and paste into the destination document, and re-zip. Then reopen in InDesign.

Now…this might not work smoothly. Perhaps the IDML references articles by Article ID# and those numbers may not have been preserved when you moved the articles with Move Pages.

But I would give it a quick test and see, if I were in this boat.
