Hi, I'd be so grateful if someone could help me. I have to create an indesign template for a catalogue, which the actualy info in will be changed monthly but the layout and title etc will remain the same. We used to have a graphic designer doing it, and she's sent me a .indd document of a past catalogue. I assumed it would be easy to just edit the text and date – but I was wrong!

One problem I'm having is updating the date on pages 2 onwards. I can edit it on the master page by clicking A-Master but cannot update it on the remaining 11 pages. It will not let me select that part of the text at all. I have also tried to 'open as original'. No luck at all! And there is only 1 layer!

I'm also having trouble with Autoflow – I downloaded the free trial of Autoflow Pro to try and make things easier, but Indesign just doesn't come naturally and the tuturials I have done don't answer my questions unfortunately.

Basically, is it possible to Import/Place text and have Indesign automatically create the right number of pages (being a catalogue with double spreads) ? I have held down shift but if there are more than 12 pages of data it adds the front cover as well – which is not good.

Any help would be MUCH appreciated, and sorry if they're silly questions

Okay I figured out how to 'override all master page items', so I can edit the date now. Still have no idea on the autflow though…

I think for the Autoflow to work you have to have the Text Frame on the Master Page.

If you set a new document and tick the “Master Text Frame”. Then you override that text frame on Page 1 (don't draw a new one) then Place the text. It should autoflow.

Check your Preferences that Smart Text Reflow is turned on.
