      Hello InDesign wizards!

      I opened my main story XML and found my text broken up into lots of small fragments in ‘CharacterStyleRange’ tags:

      <ParagraphStyleRange AppliedParagraphStyle="ParagraphStyle/szöveg">
      <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
      <Content>Amikor II. András aranybullával ellátott oklevelét kibocsátotta, aligha gondolhatta, hogy az ut</Content>
      </CharacterStyleRange>
      <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
      <Content>ókor jelent?s alkotmányos dokumentumként fogja értékelni intézkedéseit. Az ambiciózus politikai, gazdasági </Content>
      </CharacterStyleRange>
      <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
      <Content>és kormányzati reformokat tervez?, 1205 májusában királlyá koronázott uralkodó korá</Content>
      </CharacterStyleRange>
      <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
      <Content>ntsem rendezett körülmények között jutott hatalomhoz. A bátyjával, Imrével szemben folytatott politikája megalapozta a ké</Content>
      </CharacterStyleRange>
      <CharacterStyleRange AppliedCharacterStyle="CharacterStyle/$ID/[No character style]">
      <Content>s?bbi pártvillongásokat, majd fiának, Bélának királlyá koronázá</Content>
      </ParagraphStyleRange>

      The text is imported from MS Word.
      Is this useful in some way? Can it cause problems?
      Should I clean it up (merging consecutive tags)?

      Thanks,
      Botond

      What is the extension of the XML file?
      Do you see these tags in Word or not?
      How did you succeed to import the text formated like this in ID?

        The XML is extracted from the .idml file format.
        When opened in Word, the text looks normal, I’m not good with word XML/tags though.
        I imported it with the Place command.

      I usually do for my ebooks. I also change numerous iterations of a graphic to one. If there’s an easier way, I sure would love to know.

        If it looks normal in Word, placing it in ID with “File > Place” should not show the XML tags. I can’t see in “Place” window an option to import XML tags. I just wonder how you did it.

      The tags are NOT visible in ID, just in the “raw” XML extracted from the idml file.
      The problem is not that they are visible, I just wonder why are there so many of them.
      If I write a text directly in ID, a tag is closed only when a different style begins.

      IMO, they are so many because they are auto generated.
      Make a copy of the document and start playing with tags — delete, merge, create new ones… This way you can learn much more and it will help you remember it better than waiting for somebody’s response. At least, this is my way of learning new stuff.

      It’s probably not a problem. However, if you select some of the text in InDesign does it have any character styles applied to it? (Look in the Character Styles panel.) You do not want character styles applied to an entire paragraph. It should be set to No Style for most of the paragraph, and only apply character styles for small bits (like a word or a sentence)

        Thanks for the answer!
        No, no, it’s all [None]. Character styles are only applied to local formatting (Preptext script works wonderfully for my books).
