For a recent print run my printer asked me to convert all text to outlines. I did this and now when I go to Type > Find Font it does not show any fonts for the document as expected. However when I export this to a print ready PDF, and then see the PDF properties from Adobe Reader it still lists the Helvetica font. I can’t seem to figure out what is going wrong here. Can anyone please help? I’m using InDesign CS5.5.

      It’s the slug line.

I just did a test with an InDesign file with no type in it. And when exported to PDF it shows Helvetica when I have the slug line checked.

The only way to avoid the font showing up is unchecking the slug line when exporting as a pdf.

      You need a new printer.
Or at least you need a new way to convert text to outlines:

Actually, this might not get around the problem that Dwayne suggested (the printer marks) but at least it will save you other problems.

David–I admit I am still puzzled about why some printers want the text converted to outlines. It makes no sense to me.

Thankfully all the printers my company deals with don’t require that.

And it must be a pain if it comes back for corrections and you need to add type. I’m guessing folks keep the original ID file, then if corrections come in, they correct that. Save the file, and then create outlines again? That must be a workflow nightmare.

There’s some discussion about it here:

Yep! I figured that out after I posted this. Since that was the only new text that was added to the document after export. Also I tried the method mentioned in the article link above but it did not work for me. I could still see all the fonts in PDF. I know printers need not do this but a lot of them still do and the ones I work with offers me very competitive rates and timelines. Its a tradeoff I guess. Thanks for all your inputs folks. It really helped.

David–thanks for the link–I’ve read it before and I know the arguments.

I’m just amazed that some printers still insist on outlining.

I’m in book publishing and thankfully they don’t require that nonsense.

Just Turn Off or Uncheck the “Page Information” option under Marks and Bleeds while exporting PDF. The page information uses the Helvetica Font. If you delete that from the PDF, there will be no fonts under the Document Properties.
What a pity, you can’t convert that information to Outline :)
