I hvae a file with over 600 footnotes and while there is officially a footnote reference character style, it was not applied properly in the Word file and I inadvertently overrode them all and they are now part of the body text.

When I tried searching for the numbers using GREP, it only found numbers such as years that were surrounded by spaces.

How can I find all of the numbers, ranging from 1 digit to 3 digits, and apply a character style without finding numbers that aren’t footnotes.

I’m sure there must be some solution…

GREP is all about finding patterns, so you need to identify what’s different about those numbers. For example this expression: (?<=|[[:punct:]])\d+
will find all numbers that follow a lower-case letter or punctuation

David – that didn’t work. It found the last 3 digits for things like 6,000. But didn’t find any footnote references. I’d love to understand why.

Dieter – thank you! That worked like a charm!

Sorry my GREP didn’t work better… it’s tricky! But Peter Kahrel’s solution on that Adobe forum thread to use ^F is a great one… as long as the numbers are actually footnotes. I had made the (wrong) assumption that you just had numbers in text. The ^F code will work in Find/Change if the numbers are inserted using the Insert > Footnote feature.

No need to me sorry :)
I just like getting to the bottom of these things.
