I am having this problem when I was laying out my data merge info. I origionally put phone and cell phone on the same line which resaulted in the cell phone number getting split in two since the column wasn't wide enough to show both of them side by side. I then moved the cell phone number down to the next line but the problem I had then was that it would leave a blank line everytime I would come across somebody who didn't have a cell phone number. Does anyone know how I can collapse that empty line when the cell phone line is empty?

Great question! This is not obvious: Choose Content Placement Options from the data merge panel menu and turn on the checkbox labeled Remove Blank Lines for Empty Fields. (This also shows up in the Options tab of the Create Merged Document dialog box.) I should write a blog post about that!

David, I missed your reply on this since it got sent to my spam folder. Checking that option worked for me. I also found that I had some paragraph returns put into my speradsheet. That was an accident; I pressed return so that the spreadsheet app would select the next cell on the line below it but unknown to me it was also adding a paragraph return to some of the cells I was typing in. A blog post on this would be great.
