I have a file that has text, footnotes and images (with wrap) and it is giving me a LOT of trouble. Every time I move an image or add text, it either thinks about it for a long time, or the program freezes or shuts.

I rebuilt the file from scratch and for a while it was ok, but now it’s acting up again. It’s a complex file, but I’ve worked on files like this before so I can’t understand what’s going on.

What can I do about this?
      Any ideas?

Split your stories down and see if that helps.

Hi Rivkah, I have this issue with certain files but I think it is more about performing specific edits than the file itself because restarting and repeating the same edit causes the crash every time.

I suspect what is happening is that somewhere in the affected reflow there is an endless loop created in something like wrapping or breaks when it tries to honour all the style rules. To be honest when it happens it seems impossible to resolve so I make other edits and come back to it hoping that things have shifted around enough for it to work.

I always send crash reports but despite this happening for at least the last 5 major versions of Indesign this error type is not being trapped. While I work with chapter files with a single story in each running through master pages, Steve’s suggestion to split stories sounds like good advice if you can do that.

For me, the biggest culprit seems to be when I have both images with text wraps and elements that span multi-column text boxes. Things slow to a crawl. I have never found a solution — just the obvious workarounds.

I’ve had the same problem but never before recent updates. Once InDesign support “rebuilt” the file for me but that did not keep the problem from happening. Dell tech thought something was wrong with the computer and installed a new motherboard but that did not make a difference either.

Thanks for taking the time to reply – although the replies were not all that encouraging :)
I forgot to mention the doc was dual language (in addition to the 2 column, images with wraps, etc.)

On the advice of a colleague, I turned on legacy text shaping and that made a huge difference.

        Hebrew doesn’t show up normally…

The issue is mostly cleared up since I changed the setting, so there isn’t much to screenshot.

I’m so excited to share that we’re going to be launching a new version of the CreativePro website in the coming weeks… and it finally supports Unicode!! So Hebrew (and Japanese, and even emoji, etc) should finally work. I can’t wait.

(But no, I know what you’re going to ask… we still won’t be allowing people to upload their own images… yet. It’s on the roadmap at least.)
