double click interface to Open gone in CS5?

One of the hidden features in the CS4 applications if found I used a lot was the ability to double click the empty grey area below the tools panel and have the Open dialog open. With one of my mouse buttons set to double click with a single press of my thumb, this was the fastest way to get to the Open dialog. After upgrading to CS5, it seems this trick no longer works.

Is that true? Does/did any one else open files this way?

That is very weird. I've never heard of that, and it does not work in my copy of InDesign CS4 (mac).

I noticed I can click the gray background in CS5 to get the File>Open dialog box. Which is very handy.

Does not work in CS3 though. (windows)

Works just fine for me in CS5 (InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, I didn't try the other programs) same as it used to in CS4.

Maybe it's a Windows only feature?

      It's working (!) in my copy of InDesign CS4 6.0.5 (Mac OS X 10.5.8) somehow…
Hard to describe… Say, the tools palette is a one column one, in clicking the gray area once it will expand to a two column palette, double clicking again at the extremly right area of gray the palette will default to one column and simultaniously the open dialog will pop up…

hmm, if it's working in CS5 for you Roland, than maybe I need to reinstall. I'm on Windows XP, double clicking on the application window (area where documents windows go) still works (not so useful when I have a document open), but double clicking under the tools panel (single column) isn't working. I'm in the habit of double clicking there all the time, so it must have worked in CS4. I'll have to remember to try on my machine at home later.

And I'm still hoping an update/upgrade will give us the Window>Show/Hide Panels menu when right clicking in the dark grey area where panels get docked so I have quick and easy access to all the panels right where I dock them. Seems so obvious and intuitve that I keep trying that as well, but it's never worked. Add to that wish list, the ability to doc other panel icons below the Tools panel. I'd love to be able to store Libraries or other lesser accessed panels there. ANy one else have the same wishes? Submit to Feature Request!

Vasha, you're right. It doesn't work when clicking underneath docked panels. You can only get the Open dialog by double clicking on the application window, as you had already found out.

I misread your post and as a result didn't quite get that's what you were trying to do. Sorry to get your hopes up :(

For anyone on a Mac reading this, this feature only works if you have the application frame active.

But it works just fine for me in CS4 and CS5

I think it might only work east of the Mississippi. At least that's my current theory, as I have double-clicked everywhere I can think of (Mac, Application Frame is on) and I cannot bring up the Open dialog box.

That theory's as good as any other, but I can't find any way for it not to work on either Win or Mac (with the application frame).

I have CS4 at home and it only works if I double-click the lighter grey area inside the application frame. NOT under the tools palette (which has a darker grey area). Hope that clarifies things?

If your tools palette is floating, it would work if you clicked under it since that's still part of the inside of the application window.

I can confirm that it works on CS4 PC, but not CS5 Mac.

It also works on Illustrator and Photoshop CS4 on the PC.
