Deleting spaces in bullets but instead it adds a space?

The title sums it up, but I’ve a screen cap too. Does anyone else have this issue or is it just me?
Setup: Paste MSWord or Keynote/PPT bullet list into InDesign. The bullets come in as characters (not a bullet list) with extra spaces. When I delete the extra spaces InDesign will add an extra space as you see. It’s pretty tedious.
Solution: Remove the spaces in GREP, but really? Why not just delete? Is this a feature?

Yeah, that can drive you crazy! InDesign is trying to be helpful, but… not helpful in this situation.
The solution, I believe, is to open Preferences, click on the Type tab, and disable “Adjust spacing automatically when cutting and pasting words”

David, you are brilliant. Thanks for that tip.

I know it is not always possible, but I find it helpful to turn off the bullets in Word etc. right before I copy the text, no extraneous bullet characters and space when pasting.
