I am trying to create business cards using the merge document feature in ID4. The 10 sets of data don't merge onto a single sheet. Yes, I've checked and unchecked and rechecked “multiple records per page.”

When the data merges onto 10 pages, it looks fine in the preview. After I have actually merged the data, it may look ok on page 1 but all of the other pages are truly crappy, with text boxes all over the place.

I have placed crop marks, guides, and text onto separate layers. (Crop marks actually go on a master page). I have saved a file with the single card that has the data fields named, but not populated as an inx file and then opened that into CS4. Still crappy.

I did manage to get everything onto one page early on but needed to adjust the column and row gutters.

I hope I'm making some sort of sense here.

I would have copied the information from pages 2-9 onto page 1 if they had maintained the correct appearance…no such luck.

Does anyone have any ideas for getting all of the cards onto one page, spaced correctly, etc.?

when doing the merge, make the card the finished size plus bleed, don't put the crops/trims on just yet. do this once the merge is finished.

when idd does the merge, it takes the top left corner and the bottom right corner of the art on the page to be what is duplicated, so if 10-up trims are already drawn up, indesign will think that the complete imposition is what has to be merged rather than the single card.

Can I put the trim marks on a separate layer and hid it while I'm doing the merge?

nope. just tried it. have to put the crops on once the merged file is complete i'm afraid.

Thanks collywolly! I had come to that conclusion. I'm going to have a boatload of these over the next couple of months. I just need to remember to take it step by step so that it comes out correctly.
