      Hi,

I am looking for help on creating custom printer marks. Our press operators need to verify printer registration. They have requested that each time we send an InDesign document to the offset press that we include four marks on the layout page. These marks must be located on all four sides of the paper. Their position would be similar to registration marks except on the outer edges of the paper.

I have downloaded the mrk.zip file referred to in the Creating Custom Printer Marks in InDesign webpage and it seems like the correct tool for what I am trying to accomplish. I had success using the sample “mrk” files provided, however these do not meet my particular needs. I feel with a little assistance I may be able to get it to work.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

      -Greg

What kind of help you do you need? No one has a lot of experience with mrk files… it's all kind of experimental… just trial and error, really.

      Hi David,

Thanks for your reply. I am having some difficulty positioning the marks close to the edges of the layout page. For example, I am printing an 8.5″X11″ document with bleeds on a 11″X17″ sheet. I need to place my custom marks at the edge of the 11″X17″ page while maintaining the crop and bleed marks for the 8.5″X11″ page.

Is it possible to create “custom marks” or does this method only control the customization of crop, registration and color bar marks?

      Regards,
      Greg

No, I don't think there's any way to make additional custom marks. You should be able to specify the distance from the page by changing the offset field in the Print dialog box.

Ok, I can cope with no additional custom marks.

I have tried to use the offset field but it moves all marks equidistant. I want to customize this distance so that I am able to move the top, bottom, left, right marks independently and to different locations. It seem this should be possible, no?

No, I doubt it's possible to move each mark independently. You're asking too much from this simple architecture. I think you're going to have to draw your own marks on the page.
