Create an updating text reference?

      I am using CS3 and have a book with multiple chapters. Each chapter has multiple images using a numbered list (Figure ^H-^#.) In some places, I have referred to the image in the body text as “see figure 3.11” (example). If the image is in another chapter or on a different page, I create a hyperlink.

      Problem: If I add a new image in chapter 3 before 3.11, the image is now 3.12 but my text reference still says 3.11. Is there a way to automatically update the reference text? I'd like to keep the numbered reference as the text link for those who are reading a printed version.

      This is no problem in CS4.

      I don't know if there's a way in CS3 – maybe with a plugin: indesignsecrets.com -> how-to-do-cross-references-in-indesign
