Consecutive numbering of footnotes through documents in a Book

      Hi,

I have a client with many books that will need to be layed out for print and epublication. Some of these documents have been set up using InDesign and are very large, unweildly files, so I'm separating them into chapters and re-forming using the Book feature of InDesign (CS5 at this point, but I also have CS6 available). The client would like the footnotes to be consecutively numbered throughout the entire book, but so far the only way I can find to do that is “re-starting” the numbering in each chapter document manually. While one would think that surely automation of this would be a feature of InDesign Book, apparently footnotes in general are problematic with InDesign.

I've explained this to the client, and he's thinking we'll want to leave all the books in one single document so that footnotes can be added and removed without having to be sure we update the manual numbering. Since we're also going to publish via epub/mobi, I'm very inclined NOT to have one single document of 400+ pages (plus photos and art – very large files, causing ID to choke occasionally).

So, does anyone know of a script or plug-in that would allow consecutive numbering of footnotes across documents within a book file – or even better – what I'm maybe doing wrong, and it's really available already in CS5 or CS6.

      Thanks,

      Daria

Indeed, this is a problem. I didn't find a good solution either. I set the footnote number at each chapter of a book manually.

I am also discovering this problem for a project in progress. Surprising that book feature does not include a continuous numbering of footnotes while it includes a continuous numbering of pages …
Since the time (2012!) Adobe could have added that… It seems obvious to me. But can there be a script or a plugin somewhere ??
      thanks in advance

      Hello
It’s good news. I think that participants of this forum would be happy to know your solution and your expertise. And then, rather than going through a private message, the meaning of forum is strongly attached to that of sharing. From my point of view, the subject is sufficiently general to interest a large number of people.

Thanks again for your answer and if you wish, up to you.

      Hi,

I’ve just said such a script exists! … and if I give an email it’s because it’s a paid one!

      Best,
