Complex Multi-Level Number List

I’m using a multi-level number list in a document with 3 levels…All good. However when I get to the Appendix portion of the document, I have to create another list that reflects the Appendix letter, plus the section it refers to in the earlier part of the document. Here’s where the problem comes in…
For instance, the document’s 2nd level reads, “2.1 XYZ Title Heading.” Then in Appendix A, the 2nd level needs to read, “A2.1 XYZ Title Heading.” With the paragraph style set just for the appendices, using a new named list, the “A” appears and the “2.” but I cannot not get the “1” to also appear. Not sure how to fix/achieve this without doing it manually. Hope this makes sense.

You’ve probably already seen this, but just in case: https://indesignsecrets.com/multi-level-automatic-numbering-in-indesign.php
My guess is that you’ll need a new paragraph style for the Appendix, which includes the “A” in the number field.

Thanks David for the quick response. I think mine is a little more complex than that. And yes, I have created a new paragraph style, with Level 1 using capital letters in the numbers field. I even added the word Appendix so it show up in from of one on that level. All good with level 1. Now, regarding the next 2 levels…see below…
So in Section 2, my level 2 reads:
      2.1 XYZ Heading
      Level 3 reads:
      2.1.1 XYZ Heading
Now when I get to Appendix A, level 2 should read (which should reflect the main section):
      A2.1 XYZ Heading
      Level 3 should be:
      A2.1.1
My multi-level lists are working perfectly in my document’s main sections, but I can’t quite get the levels working properly to incorporate the numbers beyond the “A2.” (as shown above). This report is due next week, so if I can’t get it to work, I’ll have to manually apply the text. Thanks

I’m not sure what you mean by “which should reflect the main section.” Are you saying that the numbers in the Appendix section need to reflect back to numbering in the non-appendix sections?

Yes, exactly. So if the non-appendix section level 2 is 2.1, then in Appendix A, it should read be A2.1. Thanks David

Oh… hm… I cannot think of any way to do that with InDesign. One numbering level cannot refer to some other section or list, other than an earlier Level. Might be possible with a custom script, if you had to do this often.

Thanks again David. Yeah, it was accomplished in the Word file I am working from, but no worries. It’s not something that I do often, so for the sake of getting the project out the door, I’ll do it manually.
