I built a keyboard shortcut of Opt-Return to use for Column Break on my Mac, and it worked well for several years. With a recent upgrade, it no longer works. The keyboard shortcut shown in Type/Insert Break Character/Column Break is greyed out, but it is also a symbol I don’t recognize — a horizontal bar over a carat (up arrow, shift-6). Worse, the defined shortcut of opt-return has been disabled, even though it still shows as defined. How do I create a shortcut for column break on a mac, with the current InDesign release?

I believe the character you’re describing is the Num Pad Enter key. So I’m thinking maybe it was set to the Enter key instead of the Return key?

Thank you. I don’t have a number pad, and therefore no enter key associated with it. What really puzzles me is why the Opt-return stopped working. I just tried again, and was able to reset that shortcut (navigating through that dialog box was certainly challenging), and it appears to be working. Evidently an update to the software removed custom shortcuts.
