Character Styles without Font Family defined

I’d like to set up a system where there are two “tiers” of Character Styles – Primary or Secondary, and then a bunch of subcategories that have different colors. The Primary and Secondary would define the font, and the subcategories (which would be Based On: Primary or Secondary) could define colors. That way I could change the font of all the items in the Primary category (and all the text in its various subcategories), but keep the subcategory’s various colors.

Unfortunately, InDesign doesn’t let me have a Character Style with a blank/undefined Font Family. Is there a way to do this?

Naturally, I figured it out shortly after posting:

Under the General area of Character Style Options, there’s a button to Reset To Base. That will remove all definitions; once they’re cleared you can change only the things you want changed.

Or you can just click anywhere in the text frame (so long as it’s not formatted/have overrides such as italic or bold or something). Then the character style box will come up empty.

When I have had a font show up in the box, I just use the delete the key and it deletes.
