In version 5.0, if you created a TOC style and used it to create your navigational TOC, anything in there would be tagged as an html heading level (h1, h2, etc., depending on what level it was in the TOC) with a class name of whatever the style name is.

In 5.5, all these are tagged with the p tag. This presents a problem because some ereaders (iBook most notably) ignore certain formatting like centering or other alignment changes for p tags and will only honor this formatting for h tags. I wonder why they made this change. It seems like a step backwards.

On the plus side, they did add the Export Tagging feature so I can go in and tags these headings myself (a big Yay for this one!). But it seems they still should make the TOC headings h tags by default. Just my humble opinion.

Hi Amy, yes, they made quite a few changes in 5.5… the HTML and EPUB code was pretty much entirely rewritten from scratch, I believe.

I'm not sure why they made this particular change, but I like your idea of using the TOC to help pre-populate the Export Tagging feature.

BTW, I'm going to move this topic to the regular InDesign forum. The Pub is usually used for non-InDesign-specific stuff, like design and other informal items.
