Try File>Export and choose Adobe Interchange (.inx)

Open the .inx in InDesign and the file should open in as Untitled.

And then save it as an indesign file

I'm hoping you saved (or saved as ) the file during that twelve hour period regularly so you wouldn't lose more than 2 or 3 minutes of work.

As Eugene said–try to export as .inx.

thank you eugene. this has really helped (phew). we now have to relink all the images, partly because of our own chaotic way of working and no we were utterly stupid thinking indesign autosaved as we went along so no, we could have lost everything. thanks to you we didn't and hopefully we learned something. how thankful i am for this forum!

InDesign makes a backup of the file periodically – about every 1 or 2 mintues I think. This is saved in backup recovery file (you can view the path in the preferences).

When Indesign crashes and you reopen the file InDesign tries to recover the backup file. It doesn't always work, but it does most of the time.

Remember to File>Save every 5 minutes, it's a good habit to get into. I'd say at the end of the day do a File Save as and call it a slightly different name.

That way you can keep the old versions of files so if something diastrous happens you won't lose all the work you've done.

I always refer to it as the “Texas election” rule of computing. In Texas they vote early and often…in computing you should save early and often.

I think I save my file every 10 seconds or so. I'm just so used to hitting “apple + s” all the time. And I do a save as about once an hour and duplicate a copy and put it in a safe place a ffew times a day.

I'm glad all worked out well, meanwhile. :)
