      Hi,

I’m trying to turn a text-file-based topics list into an InDesign index structure, and only now do I realize how broken the feature is. As often, Peter Kahrel’s scripts come to the rescue, but I’m still stuck.

What I would like to achieve right now is to build a two-level InDesign topics structure (no references yet, just the topics) starting from a text file, where level 2 terms are simply nudged by a tab character, like so:

Is there a way to obtain such a (rather basic) result?

Your example didn’t come through, but I’m guessing it’s something like this:

      whiskey
      [Tab]Highland
      [Tab]Islands
      [Tab]Lowland

I suppose that the script you’ve tried is index-direct.jsx. It indeed doesn’t deal with subtopics in any way. You could try Marc Autret’s http://www.indiscripts.com/category/projects/IndexMatic, which does.

You’re guessing right. Thanks for the answer and the tip. IndexMatic looks like quite the behemoth (in the best of senses). I’ll try it and most probably buy it. After all, building a 1000+ entries index is no trivial task and I’ll use all the help I can get.
