I have two broken hyperlink issues that would LOVE some help with.

      1. I am working on an InDesign document that will published digitally when its done. The person I am working with is providing me ads as Interactive PDF’s with hyperlinks. When I place the PDF’s in a page of the document none of the hyperlinks she created are there. Can this be fixed? My intuition is I will need to create fields/buttons on the PDF placed on the page and create a hyperlink.

      2. With this same InD doc, I have created about 40 hyperlinks to different business’s URL’s and various emails. The links had been working fine… until this morning. ALL of them are broken! I get a message saying the file that linked them has been removed. Well, they are URL’s, its not like they are images files. Is there any advice about efficiently fixing this issue or preventing it from happening again?

      Thanks in advance!

      1. No, unfortunately links and other interactive elements inside a PDF are lost when you place the PDF into an InDesign document. Yes, this is very frustrating.

      2. That sounds really strange. If you quit InDesign and start it again, maybe it would clear the problem? Are they shared hyperlink destinations? They can be awful at times… see:

Thank you very much. The scripts from Keith Gilbert are amazing. I have several downloaded and ready to try.

Problem number 2 is the danger of shared destinations, and why I will never use them. The only fix is to restore the original document that the links were from. And then use Keith Gilbert’s script to change them to normal hyperlinks to URLs to prevent the problem from reoccurring. If the original document can’t be restored you’ll have to recreate all the hyperlinks. And if you try to edit those hyperlinks while the original doc is missing they will be permanently broken. It’s a feature that should not exist, let alone something that you can’t turn off as a default.

I may have unknowingly used Shared Hyperlink because I didn’t know what it was or did. I have a bad feeling I will have to recreate all the hyperlinks, but I appreciate the input from the experts.

<Deep Breath> I was able to fix the issue with both respondent’s help. I forgot a few weeks ago, I made a backup file because InD was acting squirrelly due to a font issue. I had put this copy in the trash. When I removed this copy from the trash, it restored the links. I used the Keith Gilbert script to remove Shared Hyperlinks. All is well now.

Lessons learned! Thank you very much!
