So, I’m about to get a 688-page book project to update that was originally printed in 2018, which means it was laid out in InDesign between 2017 and 2018. I know I could work on it in our current CC, but the fonts in the old files are Type 1 and TrueType. Some of these fonts have OT counterparts, but I know better than to just arbitrarily substitute these. The ones that don’t have OT counterparts are the concern, especially because a couple are music families Opus and Petrucci. While the music fonts are embedded in the notation file graphics, there are still incidental uses of them (flats, sharps, naturals) within text.
I’m going to explain this to the publisher, but I want to make sure I have a good plan, going forward. I’d like to recommend that they purchase OT versions of these fonts in any case, but I’m wondering if, in the interest of time and saving them the cost of me doing more than just updating the book, it would be more practical for me to work in an older version of InDesign on an older computer, which I have around here somewhere. Because I’m running Sonoma 14.4.1 now, and ID 2024 definitely does not support Type 1 fonts anymore, I’m weighing whether it would better to load the new OT versions and deal with different line breaks, etc.
Any thoughts? Your advice would be appreciated!
