Hi everybody. First post here, but have found myself often on this site when trying to solve InDesign related problems (the videos are great)

I have limited experience in InDesign. I have completed one subject at a post-graduate level where I learnt the basics of image placement, typesetting and the like. I offered to typeset a novel for a random person on the internet to get some practice and set up the page margins as I did for my major assignment. It ended up being top and outer margins of 3p4, bottom of 3p9, and inner margin of 2p11. AFTER I had completed typesetting the 300 odd pages and the PDF was sent for printing to this mob called ‘Create Space’ it turns out their requirement is that the inner margin is 3 pica. Mine is just shy of that and I’m told they have accepted the PDF as being ‘technically proficient’ and thankfully a printed proof is on its way to the author. I hope it is OK. It’s a tiny difference but for the sake of learning I’d like to know if it can be adjusted at this late stage.

In the event that it is not OK I’m sure I can re-set my pages to have a 3 pica inner margin and a 3p3 outer margin – essentially push the primary text frame out by one point. When I go to ‘layout’, then ‘margins and columns’ and make the adjustment it only changes the single page where my cursor is – and the text stays where it is. I’ve tried highlighting all the pages in the ‘pages’ window but it doesn’t seem to work.

Is there a way to change the margins in a fully completed document and have the change occur in ALL the pages, and have the text flow accordingly? I have a few manual drop caps in separate text frames with text wrap which I guess I’ll have to manually place again, but it’d be good if all my paragraph styles, hyphenation etc could remain as is – after all, I am not changing the size of the primary text frame, I am merely shoving it slightly to one side.

Any help you can offer will be much appreciated.
      Thanks

First thing you want to do is make sure layout adjustment is checked. It’s under “layout” then “liquid layout,” then “layout adjustment.” Tick the box that says “Enable Layout Adjustment.” The default checkmarks underneath should be okay.

Then go to all your of your master pages and adjust your inside and outside margins accordingly. The text boxes and running heads should nudge over accordingly, and the text/column width will stay the same.

That’s one reason I always have a master master page. I base all the others on that and tweak accordingly. That way, I only need to change that one master when margins change.

        Excellent, it worked!

        Thanks very much

Always use masters and styles. That’s a big project to take on as a novice. Wow. Thumbs up for chutzpah.
