This Week in InDesign Articles, Number 101
Don't tarry, check out these links!
The past couple of weeks have been amazingly full, with both highs and lows. For example, I learned the sad news that Kathleen Tinkel passed away. I first met Kathleen in the late 80s, back when I was glued to CompuServe’s Desktop Publishing Forum. She was a wonderful woman and a great contributor to publishing and the education of designers. On a happier side, the Wall St. Journal ran a terrific review of my (non-computer) book Spectrums.
In the meantime, I have also been stockpiling a bunch of good sites, articles, and videos that every InDesign user should know about:
- Hey, if you don’t have a subscription to InDesign Magazine? why not?! They’re offering a great deal for only $25 for a year. Sign up here and use the code NEWYR25 in step 2 of the ordering process.
- Why would you use the Primary Text Frame in InDesign CS6? Here’s a detailed explanation by Aaron Zalonis of this cool feature!
- Aaron also wrote up a nice explanation of Tabs, Spaces, and Indents (and which you want to use, when, and why).
- Mordy wrote up a great article (video included!) on how Deke McClelland and lynda.com created one of their best videos ever.
- Need to get nested styles out in RTF files? Rorohiko has updated their TextExporter plug-in.
- You know I love GREP? here’s a fun way to get a visual representation of any grep code you type in.
- Are ligatures really important to use? James Felici weighs in on the matter.
DPS and Interactive
- AJAR Productions has released In5, their new InDesign to HTML5 converter and it looks neat!
- Need to find out the status of the DPS servers? Check out the DPS Status Page.
- How are DPS and Woodwing doing in Japan? Here’s an inside look by Joel Ingulsrud (who I’ve known for 20 years? time flies!)
- Wow, Adobe has decided to drop several of their Touch Apps (Debut, Collage, Proto, and Android versions of Ideas and Kuler). Frustrating, as Collage and Proto had huuuuge potential, I felt.
- Here’s an excerpt from Sandee and Diane’s Digital Publishing with Adobe InDesign CS6 from Peachpit Press, entitled “10 Fundamental Rules of Designing for DPS Magazines.“
- Want to see some great tips on how to use DPS, but you don’t have an iPad handy? You can see Bob Bringhurst’s wonderful tips book in a Web browser from here!
Enjoy!
