The Mystery of the Moving Overset Contest Answer and Winner

It’s time to reveal the solution—and the winner—for this month’s InDesignSecrets contest!

Here’s the scenario: 

In your InDesign layout, there is a large round text frame with some text in it.

You decide to move the round text frame just a little, nudging it down just one point with your keyboard arrow key. When you do so, the text frame becomes overset.

If you move it back to its original location, the overset problem goes away.

The frame and the text in it are not changed in any other way, and there is nothing else on the spread, so text wrap is not causing the problem.

Why does the frame become overset when you move it?

The answer is that the text in the frame is set to align to the baseline grid.

When the frame moves down, the text is forced to jump down to the next grid line, creating the overset.

To avoid this problem, either turn off the option to align the text to the baseline grid, or reposition the frame.
