Feel free to download and use the scripts listed on this site. You run scripts at your own risk: I accept no liability for anything that you may think might have been caused by any of these scripts. Always take the necessary precautions. Most importantly, try out a script on copies of your documents, never on originals. When using scripts that work or may work on files in folders (such as the batch processor), consider zipping the files first or copying the contents of the folder somewhere else.
The scripts are in JavaScript and can be used both in Windows and on macOS. Several are in rough-and-ready form in that they use no interface, and variable information (style names, folder names, etc.) needs to be changed in the code. That’s how I use most scripts. If you want an interface for any of the interfaceless scripts here, I’ll add it for a fee. โP.K.
About Peter Kahrel
Peter Kahrel was trained as a linguist, and after a brief spell in academia in the Netherlands and the UK, drifted into typesetting, copy-editing, and indexing. To make life easier for himself, he taught himself how to script InDesign with JavaScript and use regular expressions to format InDesign documents (even before InDesign itself knew GREP). He worked as a script engineer for Typefi from 2010 to his retirement in 2023.
An Introduction to This Collection
CreativePro Magazine published this cover story about Peter Kahrel and his scripts, including brief write-ups about 20 of them and an interview. (The home page for this collection draws heavily from that content.)
Donations/Payment
The scripts are free to use, but if you use a script a lot a donation (link below) would be fair and appreciated. Any of these scripts can be customised; contact Peter for any special requirements (details at bottom of this page).
