I’m guessing you are referring to manually imposing the pages in InDesign (i.e. page 4,1 and 2,3).

Maybe making a new layer on your original file with big page numbers* that you can see in the Pages palette. You can make that a non-printing Layer or toggle it on and off as needed.

You can also use Links to which page of your original file is on which page of the imposed document.

*Master page: Type->Insert Special Character->Markers->Current Page Number
