Actually, the Last Page Number text variable by default (I think) is the “last number in the section.” So you could use the Section feature to set up a new section for each article. That should do it. If not, you could use the x-refs trick (in the link above) to create a cross-reference to a paragraph or text anchor on the last page of the article.
