P22/Lanston Type Company Announces Summer 2006 New Releases

P22 is proud to announce the latest installment of remastered fonts from the historic Lanston Type Company.
Lanston Type Co. Summer 2006 releases include the classic designs of Frederic Goudy and Sol Hess and many others with some unusual twists- 13 families in all, over 35 styles + 7 OpenType fonts. Highlights include LTC Bodoni 175 with OpenType, LTC Pabst Oldstyle Italic and LTC Glamour. All fonts have been remastered to meet P22’s design specifications.
P22 reaffirms its dedication to the work of Lanston’s most famous type director, Frederic Goudy, with the release of LTC Kaatskill, LTC Goudy Sans and LTC Pabst Italic. LTC Kaatskill was made specifically for an edition of Rip Van Winkle. The Italic was completed by Jim Rimmer and is a variation on Deepdene Italic. LTC Pabst Italic was originally designed as part of the LTC Pabst Oldstyle family which was used by the brewing company of the same name.
From famous typographer Sol Hess comes two familiar typefaces, LTC Bodoni 175 and LTC Broadway. LTC Bodoni 175 is a faithful rendition of the classic font designed by Giambattista Bodoni. Hess made necessary adjustments for mechanical typesetting on Lanston’s Monotype composition system. P22 designer Paul Hunt has remastered LTC Bodoni 175 and it is now available in a Pro version with expanded OpenType capabilities. LTC Broadway was originally designed by Morris Benton. Sol Hess added a lower case in 1929 and also drew Broadway Engraved for Lanston Monotype. LTC Broadway is a classic icon in its own right as an “Art Deco” typeface. Other Hess designs include LTC Tourist Gothic, and the somewhat hard to find LTC Squareface.
Other historic designs include LTC Fournier le Jeune, LTC Jenson Oldstyle, and LTC Glamour. LTC Fournier le Jeune, a decorative all caps combines the font designed by Simon Fournier for the Peignot Foundry in 1768 with a more elaborate “Vouge Initials” caps offered by ATF in the 1920s. LTC Jenson Oldstyle was designed by J. W. Phinney of the Dickinson Type Foundry in 1893 and is based on Morris’s Golden Typeface. This remastered set features a true italic based on the 1893 ATF italic version as well as a newly digitized Jenson Heavyface based on Phinney’s design of 1899. LTC Glamour was originally released by Lanston Monotype in 1948. It is based on Corvinus, designed by Imre Reiner. P22 designer Colin Kahn has added some unusual variants to this family illustrating that Glamour can be taken too far and have somewhat unglamorous results.
From the designs of the Lanston Drawing, there is LTC Law Italic, LTC Ornamental initials and LTC Creepy Ornaments. LTC Law Italic was designed as an imitation of a formal style of penmanship used in legal documents and used by Bruce Rogers strictly for headings. Rounding out the releases, P22 is somewhat proud to announce LTC Creepy Ornaments. It is a collection of the most bizarre, disturbing and baffling printers ornaments that we found researching historic decorative material offered by Lanston Monotype as well as other metal foundries, such as Barnhart Brothers and Spindler.
The fonts are available as singles, in family packages, and as part of the Lanston Type Company Collection (over 180 styles + 47 OpenType). Prices start at $19.95. For more information and to view all of the new fonts, go to:
