Monograms — those symbols made up of two or more overlapping letters — have been around for thousands of years. Nowadays they’re most commonly created for weddings, but you may also use them to evoke certain eras or a regal feeling.
Drawing a monogram by hand requires real skill, and even producing a good one using our digital tools is no walk in the park. That’s why I was tickled to come across the monogram typefaces from a foundry called Harold’s Fonts. You can buy a set of 13 for $99, or get them individually for $19.95.
Note that these are not pieces of clip art — they’re real fonts. You can type in any letter combination; the font will combine the letters into the style of the particular typeface you’re using.
The Art Nouveau Entwined Monograms is for two-letter monograms. As you can see in the examples below, the type designer built in frames and two options for each letter pair.
The unusual Bracelet Monograms set includes eight fonts and several customizable options. Note that Bracelet Monograms is not part of the $99 pack.
Circle Monograms is a set with four fonts that you can use to create traditional cyphers (the technical terms for initials that don’t overlap) of the kind you might see on cuff links.
