New lynda.com Video Course: Adapting a Print Layout for Digital Publishing

I’m super excited to announce my newest lynda.com course, Adapting a Print Layout for Digital Publishing.

Adapting a Print Layout for Digital Publishing

The course is composed of 25 movies and the goal is to offer a clear roadmap for converting legacy print projects to digital—even if all you have to work with is a copy of the printed book. I also cover workflows starting from old InDesign files, QuarkXPress files, and PDFs.

I start with topics like taking stock of what you have, standardizing your assets, and choosing the right publishing format(s) for your content and audience: Interactive PDF, HTML, fixed/reflowable EPUB, or Adobe DPS.

Then I look at issues like licensing assets for digital publications, updating fonts, important design and editorial questions, optimizing color conversions, and best practices for scanning artwork and text. I also try to help you decide when it’s a better choice to hire someone else to do some or all of the conversion work for you. And finally, I walk through the step-by-step workflows for each of the digital publishing formats, so you won’t miss a step and always know what to do next.

The ultimate goal of the course is to help you breathe new life into great old projects, and get the best results with the least amount of time, money, and effort. So check it out, hope you enjoy it, and let me know what you think!

And while I’m in shameless promotion mode, I’ll also mention the launch of my new personal site, mikerankin.net. It’s very much a work in progress at this point, but soon I hope to have previews of over 100 InDesign FX movies posted, as well as my other lynda.com courses, articles, ebooks, and who knows, maybe even a few non-geeky posts.
