International Typeface Corporation Introduces the ITC Avant Garde Gothic typeface in the OpenType Pro Font Format

International Typeface Corporation has released its ITC® Avant Garde® Gothic typeface family as an OpenType® Pro package of 10 fonts. The product can be viewed, purchased and downloaded from www.itcfonts.com/new.
In addition to several new characters and ligatures, the ITC Avant Garde Gothic Pro fonts include the famous letterforms used in the logotype of “Avant Garde” magazine, on which the geometric sans serif typeface is based.
“Herb Lubalin’s archetypal design for ‘Avant Garde,’ an apt name for a magazine that will remain forever connected to the typeface, surely ranks as one of the most striking and influential designs ever created,” said Allan Haley, director of words and letters at ITC. “With the legendary ligatures, all the original alternate characters as well as new cap and lowercase alternatives, additional ligatures and a suite of lowercase letters with cap proportions, the ITC Avant Garde Gothic Pro fonts not only capture but also extend the magic of the original release.”
Lubalin and Tom Carnase created the ITC Avant Garde Gothic typeface in 1967 in capitals only, with the series of unique capital ligatures used for the logotype of the magazine. In 1970, Lubalin and Carnase re-released the design to include a lowercase alphabet to serve as a text and headline typeface. It was offered in five weights ranging from extra light to bold along with corresponding obliques. The design was one of ITC’s first text series ever offered, and it went on to become one of the company’s best sellers. When the typeface was converted to digital format, the alternate characters were omitted.
In addition to English, the ITC Avant Garde Gothic Pro fonts support European and Central European languages such as Baltic, Turkish, Czech, Hungarian and Polish. The fonts can be purchased from ITCFonts.com for $49 individually or for $400 for the complete volume. All ITC fonts include a license for up to five computers and one printer.
About OpenType
OpenType fonts, which operate on both Macintosh® and Microsoft® Windows® platforms, allow type designers to create large character sets within fonts – up to 65,000 characters – well beyond the 256 characters supported by PostScript® Type 1 or TrueType® fonts. Instead of creating multiple fonts, a typeface designer can build a single OpenType font that provides access to characters that would have previously required switching between fonts.
