Heidelberg Linotype SAPHIR Series
The Heidelberg SAPHIR Series consists of two scanners, the SAPHIR HiRes and the SAPHIR Ultra2, both of which have been admired for their power and ease of use.
SAPHIR HiRes
The vibration-free MovingPlate design (the scan bed moves and the optics stay put) and DoubleLens system (you select the resolution that best suits your original’s size) power this model’s popularity. The HighRes Mode enables enlargements to 1200 percent while the MovingPlate design scan bed delivers scans with vibration-free mechanics. In HighRes mode, the optical resolution is 3048 x 3048 dpi, interpolated 9144 x 9144 dpi; in StandardRes mode, Optical resolution is 1220 x 3048 dpi, interpolated 9144 x 9144 dpi.
SAPHIR Ultra2
A strong performer, the Ultra2 delivers high-resolution scans (1200 x 2400 dpi) and a scaling range to 600% for superior quality and production capability. SAPHIR Ultra2 comes with LinoColor Elite software ensuring fast, accurate color adjustments.
Shutterbug Magazine’s David B. Brooks gives the scanner two-thumbs up in his October 1999 review: "The Linotype Saphir Ultra 2 is definitely a recommended choice of a scanner for a photographer who wants it all in one. It is strong in physical specifications and performance, and has software for the Mac and Windows that is a powerful tool for producing precisely color corrected scans with the ease of automation with Color Assistant, backed up by easily accessible manual control over every dimension of color quality."
In their October 1998 review, Macworld sets the Ultra2 ahead of the other competitors, making it the editors’ choice. The conclusion? four out of five “mice”.
