Gift Ideas for Your Favorite InDesign User

‘Tis the holiday season, and many people around the globe take this opportunity to give their loved ones gifts. After all, what’s a little spiritual materialism among friends? But what’s the perfect gift for an InDesign user? Just in case you still have some last-minute shopping to do, here are some of our favorite ideas:

  • The InDesignSecrets Keyboard Shortcut Poster: These 18 x 26 inch (46 x 66 cm) color posters lay out every important InDesign shortcut in an easy-to-read order — Mac OS on one side, and Windows on the other.
  • Real World InDesign CS3: What better gift than a 900-page reference guide to everything InDesign? Some folks believe that everything you need to know is free in the documentation and on the Web. Not so! You need The Guide.
  • Other books: For your friends and family who are just starting to learn InDesign, you can’t go wrong by getting them Sandee Cohen’s InDesign Visual Quick Start Guide. Similarly, Pariah’s Mastering InDesign for Print Production fits perfectly under any Christmas tree (or Chanukkah shrubbery). For the prepress operators in your family, consider Claudia McCue’s Real World Print Production. And every Illustrator user should have a copy of Real World Illustrator, by Mordy Golding.
  • InDesign Magazine: You’ll get extra bonus points from a colleague or loved one by getting them a subscription to InDesign Magazine! Plus, you’ll be happy because you can get a big discount: $39 for a year, or $69 for 2 years plus three years of back issues (which by itself is a $200 value). To get the discount, use the coupon code “indesignsecrets” when you subscribe.
  • An InDesignSecrets mug for your hot beverages! Believe me, you can fit a lot of coffee or tea into one of these, and we do so regularly just before one of our podcasts.
  • A subscription to Design Tools Monthly. I love this newsletter because I just don’t have time to read through all the sites and magazines out there. They do it for me and give me a synopsis of the info I need to know.

Oh, I’m sure there are hundreds of other ideas, but this will at least be a good start to help you find the perfect gift for your favorite InDesign user.
