The Flickr blog alerted me to a new photo collection on the site. The Smithsonian Institution and Library of Congress have both uploaded images shot by Timothy O’Sullivan (born 1840, died 1882).
According to Cris Stoddard’s blog post, the Flickr collection is just a taste of an exhibition called “Framing the West: The Survey Photographs of Timothy H. O’Sullivan,” which includes “incredible images from two government expeditions into the Western U.S.: the King survey of the 40th parallel and the Wheeler survey west of the 100th meridian.”
The first sample from the collection is entitled “Shoshone Falls, Snake River, Idaho, View across the Top of the Falls (Wheeler Survey)”. It’s an albumen print on paper mounted on paperboard. For more information and to see larger versions, click on the image.

The second sample is “Cañon de Chelle. Walls of the Grand Cañon about 1200 Feet in Height” and is albumen print on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers mount. For more information and to see larger versions, click on the image.

The third sample is a departure, since it was captured on a Civil War battlefield in 1863. To see this one clearly, I recommend that you look at the largest size on its Flickr page, or click on the image below. Its title is “Incidents of the War: A Harvest of Death.”
