Corel Gets Animated, Adobe Tries to Get It All

Couldn’t swing Seybold yourself? You made the show but spent too much time trolling for chachkas? Ever vigilant and discerning, our creativepro.com staffers and contributing editors bring the keeper sessions and announcements right to you.

In today’s coverage, contributing editors Marty Beaudet, Anita Dennis, and Andrea Dudrow discuss CorelDraw 10, PDF in the print production workflow, and GoLive’s bid for complete world domination (or incomplete domination at the very least). Staffer Luke Farrell delves into the future of publishing in the year 2020.

CorelDraw’s 10th Anniversary R.A.V.E. by Marty Beaudet
"Though easy to miss amidst the hubbub over the debut of Adobe Photoshop 6.0, another major graphics application suite was also unveiled at Seybold San Francisco this week. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of its flagship product, Corel Corp. announced the imminent release of — appropriately — CorelDraw 10… With version 10 Corel has introduced an animation module dubbed Corel R.A.V.E., which stands for Real Animated Vector Effects."

Going With the PDF Flow by Anita Dennis
"The Internet may be a source of tremendous information, but as Seybold conference goers learned Wednesday morning in San Francisco, the best source of information is often one’s peers — in this case, a few hundred designers, publishers, and prepress types who gathered throughout the day to exchange stories, ideas, and information about using Acrobat PDF in the print production workflow."

GoLive, GoLive, GoLive… by Andrea Dudrow
"Not only does Adobe have the most booth space at Seybold San Francisco (barring perhaps Apple Computer which, after all, has to prove that it’s back), but Adobe has made the most product announcements — fifteen in all. So as to make them more manageable for my reading public, I’ll focus on the Web-related announcements (and no, I don’t consider Photoshop a Web-authoring product, as Adobe now seems to). Luckily for all of you, this leaves plenty to talk about."

The Look of Publishing 20 Years Out by Luke Farrell
"Leading off the Seybold Keynote session "Publishing: The 20-Year View," AnchorDesk editorial director Jesse Berst set the mood by quoting Yogi Berra: "You got to be very careful if you don’t know where you’re going, because you might not get there." Admirably, the visionary view this morning comprised thoughtful speculation and analysis more than outright guesses."
