AppleScript Pro Denver Open for Registrations, Drops QuarkXPress Coverage

Registrations are now open for AppleScript Pro Sessions in Denver, Colorado, June 11-15. Organizers have announced a major curriculum change: coverage of QuarkXPress will be eliminated.
“Dropping QuarkXPress is mainly an economic decision. Interest in automating it with AppleScript has dropped dramatically over the past three years,” said Ray Robertson, co-leader. “Meanwhile, the numbers of scripters using InDesign and wanting to learn more has greatly increased.”
“Another consideration is Adobe’s support for scripting InDesign, which continues to expand,” said Shane Stanley, co-leader. “With an application that is 99 percent scriptable, we were running out of time to cover it in just a day. At the June sessions, we will need a day-and-half plus a couple of bonus sessions, and even then all scripts on the CD may not be covered.”
“QuarkXPress is the grand-daddy of scriptable DTP applications, and the timing of this for our Denver sessions is just coincidence,” said Robertson. “We would like to see QuarkXPress bounce back by making more features scriptable. To that end, we will keep an open seat for someone from Quark who would like to come and see the depth of InDesign’s support for AppleScript. We are even open to considering time for a demo of QuarkXPress Server.”
The five-day sessions will be held at the Denver Newspaper Agency, near the 16th Street Pedestrian Mall. “We love the location, and would like to thank John Garber, an AppleScript Pro alumnus, for arranging this,” said Robertson. “Each year we get more and more alumni coming back to the sessions, and it would not surprise me to see 10 people in the class who have attended one or more events previously, and that’s not counting companies who send other employees.”
Joining Robertson and Stanley again will be Matt Neuburg, author of “AppleScript: The Definitive Guide”, Second Edition. “Matt has tremendous knowledge of both Cocoa and AppleScript, which makes him an excellent person to cover AppleScript Studio, and even using AS Studio to create Automator actions,” said Robertson. “With Matt’s high energy and excellent teaching skills, we view him as the ultimate ‘closer’ for the event with his Friday presentation.”
This will be the tenth AppleScript Pro Sessions, and past events have drawn attendees from New Zealand, Europe, and Central America, as well as from Fortune 500 companies in the U.S. The classes are suitable for both new and experienced scripters, with the emphasis on practical skills that can be used across a range of applications.
Pricing starts at $1400 for any three days, with a special discounted package of $1700 for all five days. The early bird rate is available through April 30, unless sold out earlier.
