    Since I switched to Indesign CC I encouter te next problem:
    I use an Indesign file to import a bunch of Word files, and apply all my Paragraph and Char Styles there. When everything is formatted I copy the piece of text I need to another Indesign file that has the same style definitions (they are imported, so exactly the same). But when pasting a lot of changes happen: the language, color etc. It does not happen when I paste without formatting, but then I lose a lot of formatting. Very annoying :-(
    This did not happen in CS5.5, I have been using this method for over 5 years and it never failed me.
    Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

    Hi Larisa,
    have you tried import text styles to the new doc. ?

    Flyout menu in paragraph styles and choose Import all text styles.
    then try copy your text frame to the new doc.

    yes I did that. I often use this, tried it in this situation too but it doesn’t help.

    If the styles are based on the default [Basic Paragraph] style, that could cause a problem, since the default font was changed from Myriad Pro in CS5.5 to Minion Pro in more recent versions. (though I’m not sure why colors wouldn’t transfer over).

    Are you positive you didn’t accidentally select a Character style other than [None] to be the default style in the receiving document? I’d check.

    Thank you, Anne-Marie! I tried this but it didn’t help…

    My styles are based on ‘No Paragraph Style’, and I checked what my default styles were, in both docs, but it didn’t make a difference. The strange thing is that when i look at the plus sign next to the style after pasting the text, it shows me all kinds of stuff that I don’t use in any style in any of my documents. I never need English as language, always Dutch, I never use 100% c as a color, but there it is…

    I guess maybe I have been using the same docs for too long, maybe I should just remake them all from scratch.

    1. – i dont have CC so I opened idml files and then save as indd.
    2. – How Indesign works: if you have 2 styles with the same Name in another indd file, Indesign keep formating.
    For example: You have doc. “FROM” with paragraph style “Titel” and Titel is set to Trade Gothic LT Std size 48 and so on.
    then you have doc “TOO” with paragraph style Titel but Titel is set to Vitali Neue size 60 and so on.
    Indesign take you Titel paragraph style with Trade gothic… and if you paste your text frame to the another document with paragraph style Titel but different font, Indesign use local settings.

    3. – If i create a new doc. then import all text styles, it works fine. (in video too)

    Unfortunately the problem only occurs in the CC version. And the text is supposed to take the style from the receiving document.
    But thank you for taking the time to help!
    I think I should indeed make all new documents, if I find the time.

    Larisa, tried it in CC. Indeed as Luky says, if the style exists, this one is used, if not, then all goes fine. I often copy a small part of text to another doc just to have the para style in the new doc, but if the name exists, the old para style is not “copied”, the local one is used.

    No, I don’t know how to fix this. I operate three newspapers each with distinct paragraph styles… but I had mine named the same. About 25% of our content appears in multiple publications so my team will copy content. When copying from one publication to the other I see it duplicate the paragraph style, but it has the same name.

    As a workaround I changed my style names so that each has a single character to represent which publication that style came from. Now when someone copies content/styles I can fix things. I’ll check my paragraph styles and if I see two that are similar like this:

    Article Body Indent – P
    Article Body Indent – L

    I’ll delete the erroneous one and this prompts me to select the style I want to have replace it.

    I’d love to hear a better solution, but at least my workaround lets me maintain he proper formatting in three uniquely styled publications.
