Text wrap causing text to jump

I have several images within a document, some at the top of a page and some within a frame of text. All have text wrap applied via the same Object Style. Those at the top of the page, when moved or stretched, will push down the text incrementally as expected. However, those within a text frame, when moved, will cause the text below to jump as if it is aligned to a grid (baseline grid is switched off), causing uneven padding around images.

What is going on here, and how can I sort this out?

      Thanks very much!

Well, if it’s in the middle of text, it will only adjust below when you change the depth of the object. When it’s at the top of a page, the wrap above is basically cancelled out and can only adjust below. When the middle of the page, the wrap above is set and doesn’t adjust unless you pull the box up.

When in the middle of pages, I think you’re just going to have to adjust the wrap above/below manually to get even spacing.

I’ve also found that I have to have less space below than above in my wraps. That’s because the wrap below measures to the ascenders and not x height of the type. So if I have 1 pica above, I usually have 9 points below to compensate for the ascender.

Thanks for the quick reply Dwayne.

However I can’t seem to get the text to align to the edge of the text wrap even if I adjust it manually. One nudge and the text jumps down a whole line, as if aligned to a grid. How can I get it to move incrementally? Thanks…

I’m not sure why it jumps down an entire line–it does that to me as well sometimes. Sometimes I have to use a negative number in the text wrap below to move an object down.

Too late to edit: But–the text wrap works in conjunction with whatever your leading is. So it will push it down an entire line. The only way to get space evenly above and below is to adjust the space amounts in the text wrap.

Thanks again Dwayne. I think I was missing something obvious — clearly Indesign treats “Jump object” text wrap (i.e. just vertical wrap) the same as “Wrap around object” text wrap, and of course in that case the leading has to be preserved throughout the paragraph. So the simplest solution is to split the text frame into two, then the lower text will align exactly to the text wrap. Still not sure why I couldn’t achieve this even when carefully adjusting the size of the image frame, but it explains the jumping. Thanks for your help…

      I had the same problem.

Sarah from here: https://creativepro.com/topic/inconsistent-text-wrap-space-around-images pointed out that it’s a preference under Composition / Text Wrap / Skip by Leading
