New TypeFitter Pro Plug-In for InDesign CS3
Teacup Software has announced the release of TypeFitter Pro, an advanced version of its TypeFitter plug-in that brings automated type fitting features to Adobe InDesign CS3. The new plug-in is aimed at automating the process of cleaning up type without compromising quality typography. It offers the ability to create custom typefit rules to fix such text-flow issues as widows, oversets and imbalanced columns. It also includes the time-saving manual typefit tools featured in the classic version of TypeFitter. Together, these feature sets make TypeFitter Pro the most sophisticated InDesign copy-fitting solution available.
Combining simplicity, flexibility and power
“What we wanted to do was create a solution that was simple enough that anybody could start using it right out of the box, but sophisticated enough that power users could get as detailed as they needed to when customizing their own rules,” says Teacup president Lawrence Horwitz. “TypeFitter Pro does that, we think. It comes pre-loaded with a set of styles so you don’t have to edit any settings if you don’t want to. But the people who care about typography really care about typography, and they want very detailed control over what a plug-in is allowed to do behind the scenes, so for those users there’s a sophisticated set of controls they can use to customize TypeFitter for their particular needs.”
“The good news,” he continues, “is that kind of setup work only needs to be done once. After the expert creates the typefit styles and rules, they can be shared across an organization, and then the only thing a production person has to do is push a button and most of their copy problems just go away.”
How it works
TypeFitter Pro’s automated typefit features are built around typefit rules. Six rule types are available, each one customized to address a different copy issue that might crop up in a document. Users customize each rule with a set of attributes that the rule can modify and a set of paragraph styles tell the rule what text it can touch.
Typefit rules are collected together inside typefit styles. Users can create as many rules as they need to inside each style, allowing them to customize different solutions for different needs. Switching between styles is simple, as is sharing them between documents.
Users enforce typefit rules on a document either one at a time using a fix-and-find-next paradigm familiar to most people from spell-checking. Users can also find and/or fix all rule violations at once.
Pricing and Availability
TypeFitter Pro is available for InDesign CS3, InCopy CS3 and InDesign Server CS3. It retails for $199 for InDesign and $99 for InCopy.
