    Hello!

    I came across this problem, then searched the internet and found an unanswered question just like mine:

    “When importing word docs, the style mapping no longer works as it did in CS3.

    Let's say I mapped the style “text” to “Body Text”, I see that all instances of “Body Text” in the indd file have the + indicating local formatting/style override.

    I've checked the Word documents and they seem to be styled correctly and indeed, they import just fine into CS3.”

    I must add that same problem also appears when styles are imported automatically (with “conflicts” to solve).

    Any comments or suggestions?

    What version of InDesign? Are you fully up-to-date using Help>Update?

    I suspect these overrides are the Hyphenation, Character Direction and Kinsoku ones that I and other people on this forum have experienced from time to time. Some of these options can't be accessed through the user interface, and you'll need a script (like the one in the link) to fix it.

    I've also seen something slightly different in CS5 with RTFs. If the Word styles differ from the ID styles (for example, if they use different fonts), then when the styles are mapped, the text comes in with the Word formatting applied as a local override. I haven't found a cure for this other than the usual routine of changing desired formatting to character styles and then removing all local formatting.

    I forgot to say: if you hover your mouse over the name of the paragraph style in the paragraph styles panel when your cursor is in the paragraph, a tooltip will appear showing the overrides that are applied.
