A question: if printing litho and I had special gold type (PMS 872) onto a solid background, should the gold overprint or knock out?

Gold ink is not exactly the same as other 'regular' inks, as it is much less oilier. I think I've heard it's best when printed directly onto the paper (a knock out), and it may cause smudges when printed on top of other inks.

By the way, as almost all inks, it's not really opaque, so the apparent color will change when printed over another color.

To be totally sure, you should ask your printer. He will know how his brand of gold ink behaves on his own press.

ask (or leave it up to) the printer. the answer could be either, depending on the kind of stock, how many passes the artwork is being done in, if there is a combination of solids and stipples of the metallic, if there are any drop-shadows in the artwork, etc.

They could probably double strike it if it's overprinting.

I think knocking out would be better but more complicated.

I think it should be GOLD!
