HI. I am designing a book paintings (Thank you David Blatner and Anne Marie Concepcion for your wonderful courses on Lynda.com!), and have laid out a master page with master text frames for sections, titles and painting info. I completed the design yesterday and this morning found that many of those master text frames had moved, creating new text frames to the left or right. Some had even disappeared. To put it another way, on about 20 of 160 pages I could see the dotted lines of the master text frames in which I had originally entered the text, AND new solid normal text frames with the entered text to the left or right of the master text frames. On about 6 pages I had no dotted lines for the master frames at all but new solid text frames with the text I had enetered originally in the disappeared master pages. The A master was visible on all pages in the pages panel, even when there were no master text frames. Now I have adjusted all the text frames back, and if I move a master page item everything seems to move with it (phew) but I am a bit worried. The 'master' text frames on the pages now no longer seem to be fixed master frames but movableand solid like normal text frames. I don't know if it has to do with how I eneterd the text: Originally I couldn't find a way to eneter text into the master text frames on the pages, but found out on a forum that by pressing command, shift and clicking I could, so that is how I eneterd my text. Obviously this command has made what were master text frames into normal text frames (which I do not want as they can be deleted so easily) but 1. How did they move? and 2. How, if they are normal text frames, do they move if i move the frame on the master page? They seem to be acting as both rather than the fixed frames I would like not to be able to change except on the master pages or with the override master page items command. Should I have enetered the text differently? And is there a way that I can now make sure that the frames become master page items again and stay put? Thank you for your help.

Here's my guess: You added or removed a single page somewhere, causing left hand pages to turn to right hand pages (and vice versa). This is a classic problem in InDesign (and QX before it). The overridden master page items (frames you've put stuff into) get locked into place and then when the page moves, ID has to “reapply” the master page to it, causing the heartache you're experiencing.

Thank you. (Maestro Blatner yourself?) That will be exactly it. We are shifting the pages around a lot, finding what images go best with what images. Given this will be the case for the next month as we finalize the order of paintings, is there a way to avoid future heartache? Also, while I'm here (and you're there), I cannot seem to drag and drop a page which I have designed on to a blank master page. I seem to have to add it before the blank page and then delete the blank page. I am sure this is not helping the previous problem. Any thoughts? I am still a subscriber to Lynda.com and if there is a specific video of yours (or anyone else's) that you think might be worth be studying again for such a document, please let me know. ruthx

ps it took me longer to add 6 and 7 than to write this reply. I'm terrible at maths!

sound familiar. had moving text frames happen to me on my last project. just locked them in place and made sure to always insert 2 pages at once (so a L page stayed on the L side and didn't become a R page) — didn't have problems after that.
