Creativeprose: When, Where, Why, and HOW

It was impossible for one person to attend every session at the 2006 HOW Design Conference. I know I missed a few doozies, such as Russell Vier’s three-hour InDesign intensive that had everyone singing his praises. But at least I can share gems from the speakers I did hear.
Joel Templin and Gaby Brink of Templin Brink Design showed inspiring examples of two-color design. You can buy their book on the topic, 2-Color Graphics, or you can surf their firm’s Web site for free and see some of the same cool projects.
If I had been born with a name like Sally Hogshead, I might have given up on being anything but the butt of jokes. Not this woman. She started in the advertising industry as a copywriter, won loads of awards for her talents, and went on to co-found agencies that racked up even more prizes. She is raunchy and rousing and made me shout with laughter. I can’t wait to buy her book, Radical Careering : 100 Truths to Jumpstart Your Job, Your Career, and Your Life. Don’t take my word for it — check out a free excerpt from the book.
Chris Elkerton and Dave Gouveia of 3 Dogz Creative first walked on-stage in Elvis costumes. They’re as goofy as you’d expect from that and the session’s tongue-in-cheek title, “Keeping It Light: A Guide from Eh! to Zed.” (They’re Canadians, remember? Ho ho ho!)
That’s what makes their Web site for fashion designer Thien Le so surprising. It’s restrained, elegant, yet as strong as a model’s desire to remain a size 4. It’s also a site they did for free, simply to try something new.
Stay tuned to creativepro.com this summer. You’ll see several more stories born out of my time at the HOW Design Conference.
